Computer First Sign Language

Care for the disabled persons of society is our national duty and a shared responsibility of
both civil society and Government organizations. The teaching of Islam and our social values also laid emphasis on taking care of the less privileged people of our society. Since special people can play a definite role in the economic and social field, they need to be integrated and mainstreamed in our national life for full realization of their potentials. There should be open opportunities for people with disabilities and equal rights at all levels.
Computer Technology can offer needed help to students with special educational requirement. It can also provide teachers with the tools to adopt and modify materials and effectively develop student specific leaning materials.
The initiative consists on the Sign Language which was developed and evolved during practical experience and repeatedly tested at the Centre. The Management of SDA was fully conscious of the fact that we needed a much larger inventory of vocabulary to run such a comprehensive, higher level computer literacy programme for hearing-impaired. However, we decided to publish volume-1 based on what has so far been developed. We like to continue this programme further on for developing advanced vocabulary.

Hearing-impairment is a disability which can happen to any person, either by birth or during a lifetime. This is not confined to a society or to an age. It is a problem of today, as well as of the past and the future. This sees no colour, or breed. This may happen to poor as well as to rich. That means it is the problem of all societies and of all ages. Therefore, it becomes our social responsibility to come forward for the help of our brothers who are in the world with this disability. While children having partial hearing-impairment may go for normal education/communication, the children with nearly total deafness have to get support of sign language in their communication.
Last, but not the least, is the interaction of able members of our society with the deaf members. If the able members also learn the basics of Sign Language, to be able to communicate with their deaf brothers, this will help in eliminating any social segregation on this basis.
The book "Pakistan Sign Language" has been written with this objective in mind. To make the book of basic use in our everyday life, it has been divided into chapters on topics of importance in our routine life.
